Co-operative Insurance Company Limited established to provide the insurance for Co-operative Societies

1899

Co-operative Insurance Company becomes an industrial and Provident Society, changing its name to Co-operative Insurance Society

1962

Miller Street Chief Office building opens in Manchester, as the tallest building in Europe

1971

The Bank is registered as Co-operative Bank Limited

1974

The Bank is the first UK bank to offer free banking for those in credit

1992

The bank becomes the first in the world to announce a customer-derived ethical stance

1999

The bank launches smile, the first full internet bank

2000

CIS‘ first Social Accountability report is published

2002

The Co-operative Financial Services is formed, to bring The Co-operative Bank, CIS and smile under common leadership

2005

The 25 storey CIS tower is clad in solar panels, becoming Europe's largst, vertical solar array

2007

The Co-operative Financial Services undertakes a full rebrand

2009

Britannia merges with The Co-operative Bank

2002

The Co‑operative Financial Services is formed to bring The Co‑operative Bank, Co‑operative Insurance and smile under common leadership

2004

First The Co‑operative Financial Services Sustainability Report is published, launching The Co‑operative Financial Services' approach to Sustainable Development

2005

The Co‑operative insurance Ethical Engagement Policy is launched

2006

Final separate The Co‑operative Financial Services Sustainability Report is published. Formation of Group-wide Corporate Affairs and Social Goals department and commitment to Group-wide reporting.

2007

The Co-operative Financial Services undertakes a full rebrand across Bank, Insurance and Investment, including all printed material, signage, websites, branches and head office sites.

2009

Britannia merges with The Co-operative Bank, part of The Co-operative Financial Services. The merger creates a new, strong and ethical alternative to other high-street banks.
